The impact the Junior League of Tallahassee makes to our community is possible because of the dedication of our members – those who graciously give their time and resources. We are fortunate to have a membership filled with diverse, smart, hard-working and visionary women who choose to give their time and talent to positively improve the Tallahassee community through their Junior League of Tallahassee volunteer work.
Following are examples of our active Junior League of Tallahassee members:
Provisional
Denise Mayo, Provisional Member
Provisional member Denise Mayo has been out and about for the past eight years, but now she’s here to stay in Tallahassee. Her journey started while studying at Florida State University where she earned a BA in psychology and a BS in interdisciplinary social science. Denise then earned her Masters degree in political science, attended Stanford, receiving a PhD in political science and attended law school at Duke. After completing her studies at Stanford, Denise worked for a nonprofit in the Silicon Valley. She moved back to Tallahassee in August and is working as the staff attorney for Justice Polston at the Supreme Court of Florida. Denise decided to join the Junior League because she is eager to meet new people and especially young women who have a passion for community service. She is particularly excited about the JLT’s Boys Town project. In her free time, Denise enjoys going to FSU football and baseball games, lifting weights, doing yoga, dancing, leading her church’s women’s bible study and spending time with her adopted Maltese, Belle.
Active
Jennifer Diaz, Active Member
After having friends who sang the praises of the Junior League of Tallahassee, Jennifer Diaz was hooked and has been a member for four years strong. Jennifer graduated from Florida State University with a degree in English and currently works for the Department of Environmental Protection in its Communication department. Jennifer and her husband Pablo are the proud parents of two rescue dogs, Sulley and Milley. Jennifer loves the fun and community work that surrounds the Junior League, but the Heart Gallery North Florida has a special place in her heart. The traveling photo exhibit has benefited so many teens and children with medical needs who needed a loving adopted family, and Jennifer is so glad that the JLT has become so involved in raising awareness and aiding families and children in North Florida. Jennifer enjoys visiting the Mary Brogan museum, hanging out with friends in the League, and attending local community and springtime events.
Sustainer
Wilma Lauder, Sustainer Member
Wilma Lauder is a veteran member of the Junior League and a true blue Tallahassean. Wilma has been living in Tallahassee since she was five years old, and built a life here after attending Judson College in Marion, Alabama for two years. She is the widow of John Lauder and has two children, daughter Candy and son John. Wilma retired eight years ago after working as the compliance administrator for the Florida Housing Finance Corporation for more than two decades.
Wilma joined the JLT in the early seventies because of its great reputation for service and training young women to take on leadership roles in the community. As a member for roughly 40 years, Wilma has played a key role in much of the good work the JLT has done for the community, and particularly enjoyed working with the Museum of Florida History. She also was the co-chair of the Barking Box project, worked with the Refuge House and has been involved in Whale of a Sale. Wilma also volunteers and support a number of other organizations including serving on the board of the Big Bend Hospice. She also is a member of the Garden Circle, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Economic Club of Florida and Goodwood Museum and Gardens. In her spare time, Wilma’s enjoys weeding, painting, going for walks, going out to dinner, seeing movies and traveling. |
